History of the Shaker Peg Rack

A Shaker peg rack is an example of the Shaker style of simple living to which their communities adhere. While the estimate of Shaker communities still in existence is small compared to their zenith in the 19th century, the impact of their style in furniture and other utilitarian items for the home still exists.

The former manufacture that evolved into what we now call a Shaker peg rack was originally a Shaker peg rail. Both peg rails and racks are simplicity defined. In order to have a rack it is only principal to have a horizontal shelf that rests, attached, to the top edge of a Shaker peg rail.

Rack Rails

Originally, the Peg rack manufacture was the ensue of a need to store clothing worn by Shaker men working in the fields when they came in for the big meal of the day. In Shaker communities, the midday meal is the largest and most prominent meal of each day. After the midday meal, which Shakers call dinner, the men returned to work face the home. Accordingly, the Shaker Peg rail was a utilitarian manufacture meant to hold several layers of outdoor clothing in effect and simply. This type of clothing was principal for men to wear while working outside.

Most Shaker homes had an entry alcove that separated the rest of the home from the entry area in order to conserve warmth from central fireplaces or pot bellied stoves. Having the Shaker Peg Rail or Rack in that alcove allowed the clutter from outdoor clothing to be left in the alcove instead of coming into the home.

Eventually the peg rack was preferred as it allowed more items of clothing, such as gloves, seed bags and other things carried by men as they worked outdoors to be temporarily held in entry alcoves. Variations of both the Shaker peg rail and rack evolved. Rails or racks that run the circumference of a large group room were popular in group buildings for habitancy attending society meetings to hang their coats and place their hats.

A peg type rack can be made of any type of wood, but ornamental hardwood is preferred. former racks were made of Cherry, Oak or Maple hardwood from the mountain forests of Appalachia. A duplicate peg rail is duplicate height with pegs that alternate from top half to bottom half the distance of the board. The space between the end of the board and last peg is always half the normal distance between pegs.
